BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025; BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35. Linked jobs have their own page. The BLS lists a master’s degree for nurse anesthetists, but all U.S. programs are now at the doctoral level, according to the Council on Accreditation. The BLS publishes “All Other” groups for occupations it does not list separately.

A closer look at the top jobs

Pediatric surgeons: $559,030

The highest median of any healthcare job in the BLS data, in a very small field: about 1,190 people, according to the BLS. Surgeons complete medical school and a long residency before practicing, with fellowship training on top for a subspecialty.

Cardiologists: $496,010

Heart specialists train in internal medicine first and then subspecialize, which means many years in residency and fellowship.

Radiologists: $420,860

Physicians who interpret medical images and perform some image-guided procedures.

Anesthesiologists: $391,490

Physicians who manage anesthesia and care around surgery. Compare them with CRNAs on the page linked below.

Orthopedic surgeons: $358,550

Surgeons who treat bones and joints. Like other surgical specialties, the route runs through medical school and a multi-year residency.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons: $352,220

A dental specialty rather than a medical one, reached after dental school and a hospital residency.

Emergency medicine physicians: $335,550

Physicians who treat acute illness and injury, usually in hospital emergency departments.

Dermatologists: $328,730

Physicians who specialize in skin, hair and nails, with 6.8% projected growth from 2025 to 2035, more than most physician groups.

Before you read too much into this

Medians are not paychecks for new graduates. Physician training also takes many years with lower pay during residency, which a single annual figure does not capture. Our methodology page explains what these numbers can and cannot tell you.
